The focus of horror short stories is to create feeling of anxiety and fear. These two are the main ingredient of horror stories.
Most of the horror genre usually depict the story of a person who had some horrific and sad past. And after his or her unfortunate demise, it turns into some sort of intangible entity.
In most of the stories, these entities are shown as an evil with unlimited powers of doing things which is not possible in the real world by a normal human being. Many times these short stories have dilute connection with some ancient practices like ocult or exorcism.
These ancient practices were used to do black magic and call or fend off evil souls. However, be reminded that these practices are still used by religious leaders and others who claim themself the purifier of wandering dangerous souls who are caught in this world.
The most common characters in horror stories are witches, ghosts, vampires, and monsters. But the real character builds up with psychological fear. The writers leverage on the psychology of humans by inciting fear and terror.
To instill fear in the readers, the writers create a very eerie atmosphere that haunts the readers to the core of their heart.
